The Poor Wind

I guess people started coming to Wyoming because there was plenty of room for them and their cows.
Seems like a good idea; most other places are too crowded, and maybe more suitable for other prospects.  So, we have ranches and ranchers trying to make a living selling beef.  This is a rough life - one that has never been made to look glamourous, and one that challenges a human until they die or give up.
There are more cows than people in Wyoming and I hope it stays that way forever.
Our other great find here is called  "Fossil Fuels", under the dirt and only so much of - this stuff makes people rich and opinionated.

"Wyoming may be the best place in the United States to generate electricity from the wind." (High Country News, Vol. 41 No. 22)
If you've ever spent much time here - the above statement makes perfect sense.  It's windy here.  Just about everywhere in the state is windy.  So, why don't you see as many wind turbines here?

Cows and Oil.

Lots of important services get their funding from oil companies,  lots of folks who make money from cows absolutely hate the wind.  Some think that wind development would actually lower the State of Wyoming's income.  Have there been people paying the government to keep wind-power out of the state?  Incredible.  But, if you have a substantial interest in either oil or cows, this "wind-power" idea might not sound too good to you.  Could it really mean a loss in wages?

The wind often irritates me, sometimes it just seems like it won't give up - and I can't get away from it.  The wind will wake you up at night, ruin your picnic, and blow dust in your eyes.  But if I knew that this irritating force was also being harnessed and put to work, making for a cleaner environment and lessening our dependence on other countries and fossil fuels, I think I could grow to live with it's power.
